Enrichment Programs and Labs

Moses tells us that artistic endeavors are a gift - the result of being filled with the Spirit of God; and that with skill, intelligence, and knowledge, creative ingenuity is acceptable when brought to life through the prism of Biblical tenets, used to build a cohesive community, and when giving glory to God.

Taught on a developmentally appropriate age level that expands and flourishes from year to year as a child grows in ability and understanding, HCCA offers a comprehensive curriculum of personal enrichment programs and hands-on, experimental laboratories that broaden every child's perspective on self-expression:

  • Fine Arts
  • Physical & Life Sciences
  • Foreign language
  • Computer Science
  • Private Music Lessons
  • Creative Movement & Tumbling

…. The Lord has …. filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship.... Exodus 35:30-31

Fine Arts. HCCA utilizes the Fine Arts as a vehicle for building community; bringing a biblical worldview to life; and equipping students with participatory artistic endeavors that let them give glory to God. From music appreciation and drama, to the elements of drawing, painting, and other visual media; HCCA's weekly Fine Arts classes, integrated with the A Beka curriculum, give children of all ages, a fundamental understanding of:

  • Dance – From simple one- and two- step circular dancing, to running, walking, jumping, hopping, skipping and galloping, children learn the fundamentals of body movement that may lead to natural abilities at solid dance.
  • Drama – Role-playing, improvisation, mirroring, tableaux, making voices, pretending, and puppetry, help build self-esteem without fostering shyness and insecurity
  • The Spoken Word – Poetry, word games, rhymes, making voices, and tongue-teasers teach children the basics of vocal articulation and expression where they learn to hear and control their own voices and speak in front of others without being self-conscious
  • Music Appreciation – Music has many positive effects on children. The daily academic interaction of putting lessons to music, makes it easier to learn and memorize math, the alphabet, phonics, numbers, and counting. Spiritually, the Bible tells us to “enter his gates with thanksgiving and praise” on our lips. Perhaps no other medium is more worshipful or instructional than using music to bring little ones into the presence of God. Taught by degreed music teachers for children Infant II through Pre-Kindergarten, by exposing children to musical instruments and cultures of all kinds, weekly Music Appreciation classes make learning more fun. It can help children with learning disabilities and speech therapy, as well.
  • Visual Arts – There are many aspects to the visual arts (sounds, textures, colors, and shapes) and HCCA has a comprehensive curriculum involving an ever-changing array of materials and environments in which to use them, from coloring, drawing, tracing, and painting; to collecting, molding clay, illustrating stories, cutting out and pasting, labeling, and much more!

Physical and Life Sciences. The foundational belief that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" permeates the Physical and Life Sciences classes at HCCA. Hands-on and lab-based, our curriculum allows students of each age group to explore the fundamentals of their physical environment. Depending on their age, students use microscopes and other lab equipment to examine the characteristic properties of things and substances. Through interactive field trips and demonstrations, they learn about the world, about nature, and all living things including their own human body with its muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems. Supplemented with hands-on experiments, live plants, and animal observations, the instruction is quite entertaining and lots of fun for the children.

... to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. Exodus 35:32-35

Foreign Language. Introduced to the fundamental concepts of the Spanish language through introductory vocabulary, verb tenses, and basic syntax, HCCA kindergarten students learn short dialogues and phrases in order to translate some words from Spanish into English. The class also provides emphasis on Spanish and Hispanic culture and its influence on America and other parts of the world. Students interact in Spanish among themselves, with the teacher, and others in the community.

Introduction to Computers. Intended to provide a foundational introduction to technology and its uses, HCCA students learn the components of the computer, its operation, and some basic keyboarding and mouse skills. As they advance, we introduce them to the Internet, as well as various applications such as Microsoft Paint, Note Pad, and a variety of other interactive educational games and programs.
