Arctic Edge Summer Camp
Camp Activities & Field Trips
CAMP ACTIVITIES
U.S. Space & Rocket Center
One of the world's favorite vacation spots for kids, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is right in our own backyard! Home to Space Camp, and Aviation Challenge; The U.S. Space & Rocket Center includes the Spacedome IMAX Theater, Rocket Park, the Education Training Center, which houses NASA's Educator Resource Center, and countless kid's programs that cleverly intermingle science with out-of-this-world fun!
Mountain Lakes Swimming
Swimming is a kid's favorite summer time pastime and HCCA's Arctic Edge Summer Camp has plenty of it!
Twice a week, the kids get a day at the Madison County Recreational Center with its splashing good fun!
Cathedral Caverns
One of North Alabama's favorite field trips, Cathedral Caverns has a massive entrance measuring 126 feet wide and 25 feet high.
Inside the kids find Big Rock Canyon, Mystery River, and some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created. Among them, you will see Stalagmite Mountain, The Frozen Waterfall and Goliath, a huge stalagmite column that reaches the ceiling of the cave some 45 feet above!
Southern Adventures
All year 'round, Southern Adventures water and amusement park offers fun for the whole family including waterslides, carnival rides, batting cages,
a climbing wall, bumper cars, and much more. It is one of the kids favorite activities because there is so much fun from which to choose!
Sci-Quest Hands-on Science Center
Sci-Quest uses live, interactive exhibits to spark children's interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related fields.
They have many exciting features for the kids including Immersive Theater, Sprouting Scientists programs, activities fairs, and much more!
Mountain Pass Hiking
North Alabama has some of the most beautiful natural hiking trails in the
Southeast. Arctic Edge features 3 different hiking trails here within our local area: Green Mountain Nature Trail, Three Caves Quarry, and Monte Sano State Park. This hiking excursion is challenging but not too rigorous for young children, and is filled with panoramic views and a plethora of adventures along the way!
Snowshoe Skating & Bowling
Roller skating and bowling are favorite kid's activities and as rainy day breaks from the great outdoors, HCCA's Arctic Edge Summer Camp takes the kids to AMF Parkway Lanes for bowling or to the local rollerskating rinks. Bowling and skating are fun exercises that promote healthy lifestyles. Kids will get a great workout and improve their balancing skills!
Glacier Bay Father's Day Canoe Trip on the Elk River
(The Father's Day Canoe trip is included as an Extreme Field Trip outside the 25-mile radius of Huntsville and requires an additional $25 transportation & admission fee.)
Along a 6-mile stretch of the Elk River near Fayetteville, TN, children benefit from the "on the water" experience of canoeing! It teaches teamwork and self-reliance, and provides a unique perspective on nature, not to mention being a splashing good time! Canoeing is followed by a beachfront swim and cookout!
Cascade Waterfall Adventure at Noccalula Falls
Waterfalls are one of nature's most fascinating features to people of all ages. Representing God's unstoppable power and overwhelming magnificence, kid's will enjoy playing in the sparkling showers of Noccalula Falls, named after the tragic but beautiful daughter of an Indian chief.
Honey Comb Beach & Base Camp Cookouts
Located at Honey Comb Campground near Guntersville, the kids will enjoy their favorite hamburgers, hot dogs, and picnic munchies along the lake's sandy shores. They can swim and fish in one of North Alabama's most picturesque environments.
As the summer progresses and the temperatures rise, we will pick up the "Arctic" theme for a second "Base-Camp" Cookout that will be a yummy as the first!
Rock City & LookOut Mountain
(This event is included as a field trip outside the 25-mile radius of Huntsville and requires an additional $25 transportation & admission fee.)
From LookOut Mountain you can see 7 states from Seven-flags Cliff on Missionary Ridge and the world-famous Lover's Leap.
Located atop Lookout Mountain, Rock City Gardens is an enchanted walking trail showcasing soaring rock formations, caves, and lush gardens.
Kids get a chance to journey along the Enchanted Trail through the Grand Corridor and follow the stone path that winds through massive rock boulders. Thread yourself through the amazing Needle's Eye, shoulder-to-shoulder with tall boulders that allow only slivers of sunlight to penetrate the shadows. Kids love the thrilling Swing-A-Long Bridge and rock-solid Stone Bridge where the views are awesome.
Horseback Riding at 3 H Stables
The kids get excited about their trip to 3 H stables where there are plenty of animals, wilderness trails, and a barnyard. The kids get to sit astride the most docile of horses and take a gentle ride around the old corral and out by the old waterin' hole! Horseback riding is one of the most popular events at HCCA's Arctic Edge Summer Camp!
Horseshoe Bend Bouldering & Climbing
Children love to climb from an early age, but with HCCA's Bouldering and Climbing activity, no ropes and harnesses are required under 8 feet. In most cases, the boulder climbs are very short and situated over a "crash pad" or "bouldering mat" beneath. In many cases, we use a simple kid's climbing wall as seen in many rec centers and arcades. It's perfectly safe and great exercise to boot!
Green Mountain Scavenger Hunt
The kids are so fortunate to have a nature-lover's paradise right within the city limits of Huntsville.
Green Mountain is a private oasis that offers lush green woodlands, majestic mountain views, and convenience, lying between Hampton Cove and Huntsville between Jones Valley and the Flint River Valley.
It's the perfect backdrop for this summer's Scavenger hunt as teams rush to find all the items on a list - all of which are located on Green Mountain!
Bear Lodge Lock-in & Musical
It's an all-night jam session and sleepover at HCCA! It begins with a vibrant musicale performed by the kids for the parents. Afterwards are games and pizza before everyone gets tucked into their sleeping bags for the night - But it's an early start the next day with a Pancake Breakfast!
Inflatables & Car Wash
Late summer, HCCA turns the heat down by turning on a cool waterworld with inflatable Moonbouncers; wet and dry slides; obstacle courses; and jump, climb and slide combinations.
The day will include a local car wash and splash by the kids who will wash cars to raise money for their big end-of-the-summer Extreme Field Trip to Alabama Adventures. It should be good and dusty hot by this time, so invite family and neighbors to bring their cars out for a really cool buff-n-shine!
Alabama Adventures
(This event is included as a field trip outside the 25-mile radius of Huntsville and requires an additional $25 transportation & admission fee.)
Both a theme park and a water park, Alabama Adventures is a mixture of the State Fair coming to town, and a kid's fantasy waterworld all in one.
The park includes thrill rides for all ages like the Hurricane, the Barnstormer, and MarvelMania. The waterpark includes the Acapulco Plunge, the Upsurge, and Castaway Island. This is a trip you won't want your kids to miss!
Climbing & Rappelling
In the past, HCCA has taken the kids to a couple of different locations for climbing and rappelling: Camp Jackson near Scottsboro and Three Springs near Paint Rock. Fantastic physical exercise, challenging navigational skills, and rip-roaring fun, the kids will enjoy rock wall climbing in a safe environment with a "crash pad" landing if they fall!

Camp Guidelines
CAMP GUIDE
Summer Camp Requirements:
- The minimum age is 6-years-old by September 1 of the current school year, or has completed Kindergarten.
- HCCA is open from 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A “late pick up” fee of $1.00 per minute per child will be charged for every minute a child remains in HCCA’s care past 6:00 p.m.
- Upon arrival each day, for the safety and security of the children, parents are required to bring their child into the Center, sign-in using the computerized ”Touch Screen” system, and see that their child is under adult supervision before leaving the premises. Parents are also expected to sign-out their child before leaving with them each day. No one under the age of 16, or who is not “Authorized” by the parent/legal guardian may check the child in or out.
- A “Field Trip/Photograph Authorization” is required upon registration for your child to participate in and be transported to/from summer calendar activities and field trip.
- Please review the revised “Summer Camp Calendar” of activities and field trips. If your child cannot participate (for ANY reason) in one or more of these field trips, please notify HCCA in writing as soon as possible.
- Due to the difficulties or hurt feelings that often arise when these items are lost, broken, or left on field trips, HCCA does not allow children to bring toys and/or games of any type from home, unless previously planned by the Camp Director for special occasions or “show and tell.” This includes but is not limited to: trading cards, game boys, Walkmans/CD players, etc.
- Only on special out-of-town or designated field trips by the Camp Director, will children be allowed to bring “extra money” from home. If allowed by the Camp Director, parents will be informed as to which days or trips are permissible. Money from home must be placed in a zip lock sandwich baggie, clearly marked with the child’s name on the outside. These baggies will be collected by the staff and distributed at the appropriate times. Please understand that our policy is not meant to be punitive, but only helpful to our staff and sensitive to other children and families who do not or cannot bring money every day.
Health Issues & Allergies:
If your child has any food, plant, insect, etc…allergies, or any other specified needs, see the office immediately to fill out an “Allergy Alert Form” and/or a “Medication Authorization.”
Food & Beverages. Lunches from home are permissible with a few guidelines:
- Please do not bring drinks from home. All children will drink liquids provided by the school. Kool-Aid, water, apple or orange juice and milk is provided daily and will be alternated depending on whether they are eating lunch at HCCA or out away from the school on a field trip.
- No candy allowed, including chewing gum, hard or soft candies, or chocolates.
- Label all lunches with your child’s name clearly marked.
- All lunches brought from home must be in a disposable paper bag. This eliminates lost or misplaced lunch boxes.
- Students are "on the go" most of the week on field trips with little or no access to refrigeration, ability to cook, or microwave.
Installments & Payments:
Per your Parent Agreement, you will note that Weekly Installment Payments for tuition is due on Monday of each week. If tuition is not paid by Tuesday at 12:00 noon, a $10.00 bookkeeping fee will be charged each week until your account is current and your child will not be permitted to attend.
Items Needed for Camp Sessions:
- HCCA T-Shirt on Field Trip days

- Items brought from home must be clearly marked for easy identification
